Twins Embryos 2017, 2017
From the series Grafted Land 2015-2017
Grafted Land No.2 and Twins Embryos
Using over the past two decades maps produced by many different sources, I have used for the Series “Grafted Land” a Palestinian map entitled: ‘The Holy Land, Palestine and Israel’. Edited in 2010 this map is produced by the Palestine Mapping Center and sold as touristic maps in the Old City of Jerusalem. Various colors define Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights.
During the creative process, the coloured areas undergo a ‘surgical’ procedure and these severed disembodied segments are then covered in gauze and plaster and sutured with green thread. The first Grafted Map was exhibited in 2015 at The Delaware Centre for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington (Delaware) and at the Centre for the Arts Gallery in Towson University (Maryland) in 2016.
Twins Embryos is a diptych map in the shape of the West Bank, detached from its geographical surroundings, covered in gauze and plaster and sutured with green thread. One map shows a red space covered with gauze, while on the other one the gauze covers many fragmented maps of the West Bank.
