Embryo 2017, 2017

from the series Grafted Land 2015-2017

Having work over the past two decades with many different maps produced by many different sources, I choose for this series to work with a Palestinian Tourist Map produced by the Palestine Mapping Center. On this specific map edited in 2010 and entitled  ‘The Holy Land, Palestine and Israel’, different coloured are applied to the areas of Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights.

In this series of maps, the various coloured areas undergo in the first place a ‘surgical’ procedure to separated them from each another, leaving a red empty space. These severed disembodied segments are then covered in gauze and plaster and later sutured with green thread. Each maps shows different stage of map ‘grafts’.

The first grafted map, lying on an operation table, was exhibited in the US at The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington (Delaware) and at the Center for the Arts Gallery in Towson University (Maryland). Since then new maps were created, the last map, entitled ‘Embryo’ is a diptych representing the West Bank detached from its geographical surrounding. On one map, the West Bank is now an red empty space covered in gauze, while on the other map, the multiple fragments of the West Bank have been covered in gauze and sutured with green thread.
